Does this resonate?
Thriving as a freelancer, or in any role, comes down to harnessing what makes you you. We call these your “Professional DNA": your unique mix of natural talents, core motivations, needs and motivating abilities that set you up for success and fulfilment. Understanding these fundamentals can help you find meaningful work and thrive on your terms.
Here are key traits often found among successful freelancers:
Strengths and talents (or innate qualities):
- Independence: You can work without constant supervision and take initiative.
- Adaptability: You're quick to adjust to new situations and challenges.
- Organisational Skills: Managing time and tasks efficiently is your forte.
- Commitment: You're dedicated to delivering quality work consistently and on time.
- Perseverance: You bounce back in the face of setbacks.
- Vision: You see the ‘big picture’ and plan accordingly.
- Risk-Taking: You're comfortable with uncertainty and taking calculated risks.
- Curiosity: You're always eager to learn and explore new ideas.
Core motivations and needs:
- Autonomy: You love having control over your work and decisions.
- Responsibilities: Being your own boss excites you.
- Flexibility: You value the freedom to work when and where you want.
- Freedom of Choice: You want to choose your projects and work methods.
Now, what skills do you need?
Of course, you have to master the skills in the specific field you decide to offer your services for. But as a freelancer, you also become your own boss and therefore must think about much more than just performing tasks. While the following skills are not ‘must-haves’, they can be valuable for the position:
- Client Relations: Happy clients usually bring in more business! It is therefore essential to build trust from the outset and maintain strong client relationships.
- Marketing and Communication: Spoiler alert: you're not the only freelancer in your field ! Therefore, standing out is primordial: promote yourself, show what you can do and depict what makes you different.
- Time Management: Accepting 10 jobs at a time is tempting, but you need to efficiently plan and execute tasks so that you don’t end up working overnight to make your clients happy.
- Budget Management: Make sure you don’t run out of money before the fun begins! You need to handle finances and budgeting for projects.
Don’t have all these skills? Well, that’s pretty normal. And don’t worry! There are over 70 million freelancers worldwide, and most of them weren’t born accountants, client relationship managers or marketing experts. Many businesses offer tools to have your back on all ends, affordably.
